Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews

They crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side, and Jesus in the midst.  And Pilate wrote a title also, and he put it upon the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.  This title therefore many of the Jews did read: because the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, in Greek, and in Latin.        ~St John 19:18-20 (DRA)

King of the Jews

His Name.

His beautiful, perfect Name.

Written in the most common languages and placed above Him for all to understand for all of eternity.

Even after they got what they wanted, they protested.

Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate: Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am the King of the Jews.  Pilate answered: What I have written, I have written.       ~St John 19:21-22 (DRA)

Did they still not know the power of His Name?  Do we?

Because I go to the Father: and whatsoever you shall ask the Father in my name, that will I do: that the Father may be glorified in the Son.  If you shall ask me any thing in my name, that I will do.     ~St John 14:13-14 (DRA)

Looking at the image of Christ crucified, INRI inscribed above Him, the truth is undeniable.  His Name pounds in my heart, captivates my soul, and drives me to my knees.

Humanity demanded His death.  The salvation of humanity required His death.

He willingly complied from both perspectives.

For the glory of the Father, He gave His life.

He gave everything.  He gives us everything.

Everything we ask in His Name.

Even when we know not what we do.

Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum.

Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.

Viva Cristo Rey!

  1. What beautiful words. Our Saviour was born to die for us and as unworthy as we are His love, grace, and mercy are ours because of his death and resurrection.
